Art Portfolio for College
Many art schools and colleges require a portfolio as part of the application process for art-related majors. A portfolio is a collection of your artwork that shows your skills, creativity, and artistic growth. It can include everything from quick sketches and studies to finished, polished pieces.
When building your portfolio, try to explore a variety of mediums, techniques, and styles. Schools want to see how you think as an artist, how you solve problems creatively, and how your work has developed over time—not just one type of artwork.
When choosing which pieces to include, remember that quality matters more than quantity.
Most colleges will give you a specific range for the number of pieces they want to see, allowing you to submit your strongest work with consistent quality. Typically, portfolios include 10–20 pieces, depending on the school. Be sure to carefully review each college’s portfolio requirements, as they can vary from one program to another.
